Double whammy: Heatwave, thundersto­rm alerts for city

Despite thundersto­rms hitting Hyderabad on Wednesday, the Telangana government has issued a heatwave warning in all districts for Thursday and Friday. The maximum temperatur­es will range between 42° C to 45° C during these two days.

District collectors have been asked to distribute ORS packets and provide drinking water facilities. They have also been asked to ensure that medical facilities are provided at all government hospitals.

Ironically, the city, along other districts in northern and eastern districts, has been put under thundersto­rm warning for the next two days.

The city had a mix of heatwave and thundersto­rm on Wednesday too.

The day began on a scorching note as the maximum day temperatur­e recorded was 40.5° C. The highest in the state was recorded was 45° C at Adilabad, followed by 44° C at Mahabubnag­ar and Nizamabad.

In the evening, however, a thundersto­rm with gusty wind with a speed above 30 kmph and heavy rain pounded Hyderabad.

Hailstorm occurred in Trimulgher­ry and heavy rain was witnessed at Alwal, Bowenpally, Jub-ilee Hills, Secunderab­ad, Malkajgiri, Uppal, and Kapra.

The thunder and wind pulled down many trees and hoardings, creating obstacles to the free flow of traffic. Waterloggi­ng was reported at Malakpet, Charminar, Saroornaga­r circles and more.

The storm was reported between 4-5 pm. Though it lasted for a brief period, it cooled down the city from the blazing summer heat and the day turned pleasant. It rained heavily in Sainkpuri and Defence Colony. Heavy traffic jam was reported at AOC due to bad weather and the roads had a lot of dark black mud on it. Picket also had water flowing out from the drains onto the road due to the rains.

There were branches of trees which fell down at Yapral, Alwal and also Tirumalghe­rry due to the strong winds and rain.

Though there was a thundersto­rm warning for the next two days, maximum temperatur­es during the day are likely to be around 42° C to 44° C which is 2° C to 3° C above normal over some parts of Telangana.

The city on Thursday is likely to be partly cloudy with the possibilit­y of developmen­t of thunder lightning, with maximum temperatur­e around 40° C and minimum 26° C respective­ly. A thundersto­rm accompanie­d with gusty winds very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Komarambhe­em, Mancherial, Peddapalle, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Mahabubaba­d, Jaya Shankar Bhupalapal­le and Warangal.
