Telugu Desam activists reportedly attacked the convoy of Bharatiya Janata Party national president Amit Shah on his way to Ramachandrapuram Ashramam from Tirumala on Friday, apparently in protest against the Centre’s refusal to confer Special Category Status on Andhra Pradesh.

Tension prevailed at Alipiri in Tirupati when TD workers staged a demonstration against Mr Shah as he was proceeding to Renigunta airport from Tirumala hills and in the melee a stone was allegedly hurled at one of the vehicles in his convoy.

According to a media report, Amit Shah had gone with his family to visit Tirumala when Telugu Desam cadres also raised slogans against the BJP chief, chanting ‘Go back, Amit Shah’.

Telugu Desam activists reportedly attacked the convoy of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah on his way to Ramachandrapuram Ashramam from Tirumala on Friday, apparently in protest against the Centre’s refusal to confer special status to AP.

As Mr Shah’s vehicle reached Alipiri, several people attacked it, with the police trying hard to control the protestors. An unconfirmed number of people were later taken into custody. A car belonging to Srikalahasthi BJP leader Kola Anand was also damaged in the attack. “Amit Shah was pained by the entire incident,” he said.

The BJP lodged a complaint with the Tirupati urban superintendent of police about the assault. BJP leader Bhanu Prakash Reddy said, “This is an undemocratic step by TD, which claims to be a national party. The Chief Minister has 40 years of experience in politics and still doesn’t know how to handle such situations. There was a message to the activists from Amaravati to attack Amit Shah.”

Earlier, Shah had a darshan of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala, and left for the airport after offering pooja at Ramachandrapuram Asharamam.
