The CBSE’s decision to introduce a health and physical education period of one hour every day has been appreciated by many.

The board also notified that students who are into sports will be allowed to give their board exam at later dates with special permission.

One of the beneficiaries is a Class X student from Vijayawada, K. Venkatadri of St John’s High School, who bagged three silver medals at the South Asian Archery Championship at Dhaka.

The student said that he was very happy to get the support of the school and the board which was a must to encourage sportspersons.

Two Class XII students and four Class X students were given special permission after the CBSE confirmed their participation in various events from the Sports Authority of India and granted them permission to write the board exams at a later date.

Students expressed their gratitude to the board via letters.

Earlier, many of the students were discouraged by teachers and parents from participating in major tournaments if they were being held during the exam month of March. This cost the students and the schools many laurels.

An hour of physical education has been made mandatory for students from Classes IX to XII from the upcoming academic year.

It is compulsory for students to go to the playground for an hour and they will be given grades on the basis of their activities.

Cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar penned a letter to the board stating that he had been advocating the integration of sports into school curriculums to promote health and fitness from a young age.

Sachin’s letter cited the rising concerns of obesity in young children and spoke of how sports can help in developing discipline, character and focus of each child.
