Infosys to double headcount in city

While techies are petrified by layoffs, Infosys is doubling its workforce in Hyderabad from the existing 20,000 to 40,000, in phases.

Minister K.T. Rama Rao announced the planned increase at the World Environment Day celebrations jointly organised by Infosys and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in its Hyderabad SEZ campus in Pocharam, focusing on the 2018 theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

While Infosys did not comment on the date of accomplishment, it said it will consider setting up a campus in Warangal upon the request of the minister.

“What Mysore is to Bengaluru, Warangal is to Hyderabad. Tech Mahindra and Cyient are already coming forward to setup campuses in Warangal. Infosys can setup a smaller campus in Warangal and enable further growth in the ecosystem which has 16 engineering colleges and a National Institute of Technology,” he said.

Infosys COO Praveen Rao said that they would give serious consideration to setting up a campus in Warangal, not just as a policy of setting up campuses in tier 2 cities but also to minimise migration. Attrition in Hyderabad Infosys is less than that in Bengaluru.

The minister, while hard-selling Hyderabad to Infosys, noted that 40 per cent of the workforce in Bengaluru was from Telangana and AP, and given an opportunity, many people were ready to come back.

Mr Rama Rao, assuring the support of the local ecosystem as more investment flows in, said “There is humidity in Chennai, traffic in Bengaluru, and smog in Delhi. So Hyderabad wins hands down”.
