-

The Central Zone Task Force nabbed a man on charges of cheating students preparing to go abroad and promising to help them pass (International English Language Testing System) IELTS and (Test of English as a Foreign Language) TOEFL on Sunday. So far he is suspected to have cheated 40 people to the tune of `50 lakh, police said.

The arrested was identified as K. Kiran Kumar, a resident of Malaysian Township, Kukatpally and a native of Nizamabad district. Yuvraj Singh from Jalandhar, Punjab is absconding.

According to the police, Kiran Kumar completed his engineering in 2013 from Nizamabad and worked as a site engineer for GPNR Constructions at Bengaluru till 2016 for `20,000 a month. He then decided to go abroad to earn more and moved back to Hyderabad two years ago with a plan to move to Australia.

“He started preparing for IELTS, which is conducted for non-native English speakers wanting to study abroad. During this, he came in contact with Yuvraj, who claimed to be a main consultant and having links with people conducting the exams. He demanded `1.5 lakh from each candidate to get a good score,” police said.

Initially Kiran, got the keys of IELTS, TOEFL with the help of Singh and handed them over to 40 students. They secured good marks and left abroad.

“About 40 others did not score well as he did not provide the key on time and cheated them. He used to give the key hours before the exams. He then gave `1.5 lakh to Singh as commission and spent the remaining amount lavishly,” police said.

So far, four cases have been booked against him one each at Chaitanyapuri, Malakpet, Mirchowk and Saifabad police stations. Kiran Kumar was handed over to the Saifabad police for further investigation.
