OU to launch first of its kind smart data centre

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Osmania University will soon launch a smart data centre with the capacity of 300 Tera Bytes (TB) with a one of its kind storage area network.

After the launch of the data centre, the university will introduce new courses related to data science, cyber security, super-computers and invite guest faculty from across the world.

The data centre will have biometric access control as companies switch to fingerprint scanning and other biometric technologies for protection of their data.

Prof. M. Gopal Naik, director, infrastructure, OU, said all research data will be stored in the command control room. The data centre will store information related to students, faculty and staff. He said no university had established this kind of data centre in the country. OU will spend about `3 crore from the university and Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) funds.

The university had recently celebrated its centenary year, and drawn up big plans for development.

“The data centre will have biometric access control by utilising a non-duplicator identifier — an employees fingerprint — security. Staffers will be able to biometrically control access to sensitive areas,” Prof. Naik said. The facility is ready and will be launched shortly, he said.

The data centre will be equipped with Emerson Precision Air Conditioner Liebert CRV, a self-contained precision cooling unit ideally designed for cooling rows of racks in small and medium data centers. The monitoring system manages the power environment and the equipment in the computer room.

The monitoring system can plug in the intelligent sensors of Emerson, provide alarm notification for various equipment and environment status.

The Intelligent Integrated Infrastructure essentially includes internal redundant or backup power supplies, environmental controls (for instance, precision air conditioning, fire suppression, smoke detection, water leak detection, humidity sensor etc), security devices etc, Prof. Naik said.
