Shia Waqf Board for uniform code

- J. VENKATESAN | DC

In a significant development, the Lucknowbased Central Shia Waqf Board has urged the Law Commission on Wednesday to come out with a Uniform Civil Code for all religions including Muslims as it would help rid discrimination against women.

In response to the Law Commission seeking suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code from across the country, Syed Waseem Rizvi, chairman of U.P.Shia Central Waqf Board, pointed out that Goa has a Common Civil Code since 1965, which is applicable on all its citizens.

He said if UCC can be implemented in Goa, then it can be enforced throughout the country.

THE SHIA Board has also opposed the AIMPLB’s decision to set up parallel courts to decide cases under the Shariat law.

In a significant development, the Lucknow-based Central Shia Waqf Board has urged the Law Commission on Wednesday to come out with a Uniform Civil Code for all religions including Muslims as it would help rid discrimination against women.

Rejecting the opposition of AIMPLB that even if a common civil code is formulated, it should be optional for the Muslims to adopt its provisions, the Shia sect said such a code should be applicable for all throughout the country.

On the objection against UCC that it would be a tyranny to the minority community, the Shia Waqf Board said the right to equality guaranteed under Article 14 and right against non-discrimination under Article 15 and right to life and liberty under Article 21 can’t be secured and gender justice can’t be achieved without implementing UCC.

Opposing polygamy and triple talaq, the Shia Board said a man marrying upto four wives and divorcing his wife by utterance of triple talaq or refusal to maintain a divorced wife after a limited period of three months are all practices derogatory to the dignity of woman.
