Activists lament neglect of monuments

-

Activists lamented that the government was neglecting heritage monuments, resulting in structures collapsing. Following the collapse of the Mississippi hangar, they plan to pressure the government to take up repairs and renovate important heritage structures across the state.

Nizam Family Welfare Association president Najaf Ali Khan, a heritage activist, demanded an inquiry into the collapse. He said the authorities were deliberately neglecting iconic heritage monuments built by the Nizams.

“The authorities are intentionally neglecting renovation of the structures. The monuments and palaces were constructed by spending huge amounts of money and workers from foreign countries were roped in. The authorities are doing little to conserve the structures. As a result, one after the other, several historic landmarks are disappearing from the city,” he said.

Heritage activist Dr Khalid Saifuddin said the government was not considering “heritage” as part of the city. “The government lacks interest in preserving monuments or structures. They are allowing the structures to get damaged,” he said.

The Heritage Buffs group, a collective of activists, is planning to highlight the issue with the government and draw its attention towards the heritage structures and monuments spread across the state.
