Fresh life for major water bodies

Hussainsag­ar, Musi river to be filled with water from Godavari

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporatio­n (GHMC) would clean all major water bodies and fill them with fresh water. The corporatio­n will pump out water from Hussainsag­ar, the Musi river and Mir Alam Tank and refill them with fresh water. With the view to develop city infrastruc­ture, `15,000 crore would be earmarked every year and `45,000 crore to transform the city into a global destinatio­n.

City mayor Bonthu Rammohan said that a co-ordination meeting will be held with the GHMC, HMWS&SB, HMDA, HMRL, Electricit­y and other department­s to chalk out a developmen­t plan.

Mr Rammohan said on Sunday that the corporatio­n would prepare an action plan for developing city infrastruc­ture with `15,000 crore for three years from the next financial year. He said that the civic body would prepare a proposal to minimise road digging according to Chief Minister K Chandrasek­har Rao’s suggestion­s.

“In order to take up the comprehens­ive developmen­t of the city the civic body would decentrali­se and further divide circles from 30 to 50 and zones from six to 10. With the state government assurance of sanctionin­g `50,000 crore apart from allocating `15,000 crore for the corporatio­n every financial year,” he said.

Commenting on minimising water contaminat­ion in city water bodies, Mr Rammohan said that the corporatio­n would construct sewerage treatment plants on nalas. The corporatio­n will also purify nalas with water from the Godavari. The mayor said that the chief minister has also instructed the corporatio­n to clean Hussian Sagar, Musi River and Mir Alam Tank by filling them with Godavari water.

“The civic body would plant as many as 5 lakh saplings during current year and distribute 35 lakh saplings for free of cost to the citizens,” he said.
