- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, JULY 14

In order to provide exposure to citizens, the GHMC on Saturday organised a Swachh Hyderabad Internship Programme (SHIP) to promote the goal of Swachh Bharat Mission through citizen and youth participation.

Officials said the programme will serve as an opportunity for the youth to make a significant contribution to the city by participating in swachhata activities at the ground level.

Hundreds of IT employees attended the first SHIP that was launched at the Global Peace Hall, Brahma Kumari Shanti Sarovar Bhavan.

The interns will learn about solid waste management and sanitation with field-level interaction with workers. The programme will teach about about waste segregation from the source level and plastic ban promotion. The interns will promote the ban of single-use plastics along with GHMC staff at vulnerable areas such as weekly markets and road-side food stalls. Participants will plant trees at selected locations and aid in cleaning selected lakes.

Addressing the gathering, GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said efforts would be made to make Hyderabad a Swachh City by January next, and sought support for the Swachh Hyderabad initiatives. Even before Swachh Bharat, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had launched Swachh Hyderabad and GHMC was taking up different initiatives to this end, he said.

Dr Janardhan Reddy said SHIP would serve as an opportunity to the youth to make a significant contribution to the city in a constructive manner by allowing them to participate in various Swachhata activities at the ground level, and learn about the system and processes of solid waste management and sanitation in the GHMC.

The field activities will mainly focus on segregation of waste, activities related to the plastic ban and plantation.

He said for the convenience of women, 40 She Toilets were set up across the city.
