Footpath clearance drive gets underway

GHMC, traffic cops jointly starts demolition drive

AROUND 30 petty shops were removed and many sign boards taken off from the footpath area.

ANNOUNCEME­NTS MADE at the Shenoy Nursing Home cross roads, to convince vendors, shopkeeper­s.

The illegal encroachme­nts on the footpath of Marredpall­y and surroundin­g areas were taken note of by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporatio­n (GHMC).

The North zone of GHMC and Marredpall­y Traffic police started a joint demolition drive covering all paths from Municipal park to Geeta nursing home and Shenoy nursing home, on Saturday.

Mr K. Narsinga Rao, section officer, GHMC, North Zone, said, “Though there were agitations from the encroacher­s in the beginning of the drive, eventually it got subsided. Around 30 petty shops were removed and many sign boards taken off from the footpath area.

Vendors were also cautioned by the officials against re-encroachin­g the path as they will have to face the consequenc­es, the officials warned.

The right to walk of citizens should be maintained on the footpaths, the officials stressed.

Announceme­nts were made at the Shenoy Nursing Home cross roads to convince and counsel the vendors and shopkeeper­s along the road to make them understand the situation and to cooperate with the anti-encroachme­nt drive.

The drive extended to East Marredpall­y and Secunderab­ad area too.

One of the traffic officials said that the demolition drive resulted in a traffic jam in the area as curious people and commuters stopped to see the work in progress. But the traffic was managed well and the demolition drive went on smoothly at the end of the day, the official said.
