WHAT IS NRC?

National Register of Citizens is a record of all legal citizens of a state. The first NRC list was created in 1951.

In 1980 a memorandum was submitted to the Centre, seeking updation of the list. The move was aimed at protecting the indigenous culture of Assam from illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

In 2005, a decision to update the NRC was taken.

In 2010 the first updation of the NRC in Barpeta and Chaygaon was called off by the state after violent protests in which four persons were killed and several injured. Applications were invited in 2015. WHO ARE ELIGIBLE?

The latest updation of the list in Assam will have Names of descendants of those whose names were in the 1951 list, or those who were in Assam's Electoral rolls till March 24, 1971.

The NRC (1951) and the Electoral Rolls updated up to the midnight of March 24, 1971 together are collectively called as the Legacy Data. SECOND CHANCE Persons, whose names do not appear in the final draft, can re-apply within.

The claim will be filed from August 30 to September 28 and will be finally disposed of after proper hearings.

The final list of the NRC will be published by December this year, home ministry has said.

The NRC draft may render a significant number of people stateless and arbitrarily deprive people of their nationality, human rights watchdog Amnesty International India said on Monday.
