New DNA tech to change crime detection scenario

Hyderabad is only a step away from being able to use such technology

- RAHAEL MATHEW | DC HYDERABAD, AUG. 3

It is time now for unidentified suspects to start getting worried. New DNA technology derived from crime scenes can decipher who committed the crime. Physical features like eye colour, hair colour, and facial features can all be discerned.

One of the newest discoveries is the process of Methylation. Most DNA strands often connect with molecules present in their structures to create a pattern.

However, this pattern can be studied by finding those strands that do not connect with molecules that have changed as a process of ageing.

Recently, a law was passed in Germany allowing Bavarian police officers to use the method of Methylation to discern the age of the suspects.

Developed countries around the world are making headway in adapting new technologies to their methods of crime solving. The question now arises as to where does India stand in the realm of things and most importantly, where does Hyderabad figure in using new technology to solve crimes.

Dr Venkana, Head of CLUES, says, “Such technology is still not available here, however, we at CLUES are well aware of these advancements in DNA technology. Next generation DNA profiling as mentioned can find stereotypical characteristics like shape of the hair being curly or straight or even the eye colour of the suspect. However, as of now, the department is only able to decipher the sex of the suspect but not any other physical descriptions. We are working on trying to procure the machine and technology to be able to use methylation like technology in solving our crimes as well. Be rest assured that it is only a matter of time before we are able to use new DNA technology.”

Advancements in the field of DNA are on the verge of changing how crimes are being solved and drastically reducing the time frames within which they are being solved. Criminal courts are becoming more inclined towards having DNA related evidences being produced in arguments.

The results of DNA technology is backed by scientific facts that cannot be altered as DNA is unique in every person in this world. And now, Hyderabad is only a step away from being able to use such technology.
