TRS Parliamentarian Ms K. Kavitha on Friday led a delegation of the party's MPs to Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedekar in Delhi seeking increase in salaries for mid-day meal workers. She brought to the minister's notice the plight of 52,000 workes who were being paid a meagre salary of `1,000 per month since 2010 and that it was not revised even after 8 years.
Ms Kavitha said that mid-day meal workers, mostly women, are playing a key role in the successful implementation of scheme and contributing to raising the literacy levels in all states but were being ill-treated with meagre salaries.
“They were not paid a single rupee from 2002 when the scheme was introduced till 2010. They are getting a meagre salary of `1,000 per month since then. These salaries have not been revised so far,” Kavitha said.
The Nizamabad MP urged Mr Javedekar to bring these workers under the Minimum Wages Act so that they can get the benefits of Employees State Insurance and Employees Provident Fund.
