Pigeon show in Old City gets about 1,000 visitors

A pigeon show was organised in the Old City by the Hyderabad Club on Sunday. About 50 pigeon lovers and breeders participat­ed in the day-long event held at the Dayanand Function Hall in the city.

About 1,000 people visited the show. Pigeons of different colours and breeds were showcased for the public.

The show-third edition of the Hyderabad Pigeon Show’ was organised by the Hyderabad club which has about 120 members. Homing pigeons usually reared by the pigeon loves and breeders were displayed during the show where in participan­ts from across the city gathered.

Mohd Basith, one of the organizers said that the show is held annually to serve as a platform for the pigeon rearers to know each other and for the public to have a glimpse of the different breeds. “Usually people know pigeons by their colours. But there are pigeons of some breeds which cost about `25,000 to `35,000 a pair in the city,” he said.

Ghalib Saif Ali, another organiser said that it was also an opportunit­y for the bird rearers to interact with each other.

“Next the pigeon rearing is an old hobby in the older parts of the city and people irrespecti­ve of their caste and creed rear the birds. In February and March pigeon racing is organized too,” he said.
