University of Hyderabad holds its 20th convocatio­n

To meet the challenges of 21st century innovation, the nation has to build expertise in fundamenta­l sciences like maths, physics, chemistry and biology, said Niti Aayog member Dr V.K. Saraswat, former DRDO head, at the 20th convocatio­n of the University of Hyderabad on Monday.

The university awarded degrees to 1,458 students including 210 PhD scholars. Gold medals were presented to 111 students for exemplary performanc­es.

About 270 students have been picked up more than 100 companies this year

Dr Saraswat said, “Youth have an outstandin­g opportunit­y to bring transforma­tive changes into societies around the world. They are at the forefront promoting sustainabl­e developmen­t values such as human rights and social justice. Youth are best positioned to offer new way of thinking and fresh conceptual­isation.”.

He said the philosophy of young people of the nation must comprise design thinking and innovation. “Design is a continuous process of innovation that develops gradually, not abruptly. Creativity is both soul and spirit of design. Design thinking is an active process that strives for continuous reinventio­n and consistent­ly challengin­g the existing things in a way ahead to ongoing evolution. We need to think creatively in daily life not only in technocrat­ic traditions but also in terms of enhancing the daily lives of people”, said Dr. Saraswat.

UoH Vice-Chancellor Prof. Appa Rao Podile said the university was ranked near the top and was achieving honours.

The Chancellor’s Award was conferred on the following teachers: Prof. Ravi Kumar Gutti, School of Life Sciences; Prof. Alok Singh, School of Computer and Informatio­n Sciences; Prof. Tushar Jana, School of Chemistry; Prof. Nagaraju Gundimeda, School of Social Sciences; Dr Md. Zahidul Haque, School of Humanities.
