Future looks bleak
The earth can be protected from global warming with hard science and by having a good relationship with nature, said Tejal Kanitkar, chairperson of the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies.
Ms Kanitkar, who had captured the attention during the Mumbai Collective, 2017, gave a presentation on climate change at the Manthan Samvaad held at Shilpakala Vedika on Tuesday.
Ms Kanitkar did not spare political leaders across the globe for their policies on climate change. She said external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had said that “we are going to take a leadership role with spiritual commitment. Others said that climate change and global warming can be controlled with traditional knowledge. I wonder how can tradition be the answer when the problem is new?” she asked pertinently.
Ms Kanitkar said, “The future looks bleak if governments continue to behave the same way. The hard science which includes both natural and social science, better relationship with nature and with other can help us defeat global warming to have a good climate. People should start working hard, as many of us are depending on machines that help carbon emission. Though the government has taken up many projects like incentives for solar panels etc, the amount of the change is very minimal when compared with the emission. Use of fossil fuel has become common for economic activities, which is the main reason for climate change and global warming.”
She said large-scale changes in greenhouse gases started after the industrial revolution.
