Taking the celebrations to new heights, the women’s prison at Chanchalguda allowed children and their mothers to bond during these celebrations. The authorities distributed sweets and snacks to the inmates as additional metropolitan sessions judge, Nampally, Hyderabad Suneetha Kunchala, encouraged woman inmates to begin their process of transformation during their time inside the prison. The prisoners who had begun their practice session a week ahead were encouraged by the authorities in enacting skits on Maha Parivarthan and reformation. The prisoners also sang devotional songs in addition to the national anthem.

Speeches were given on the journey of Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from the display of cultural arts, the prisoners also took active part along with their children in essay writing, elocution, painting and rangoli making for which winners were applauded by Basheera Begum, superintendent, Special Prison for Women.

She said, “The initiative brought light into the prison. The women took active roles and were able to express themselves through art forms that will further aid in their transformation, which is the main aim of the prison initiatives begun by director general (Prisons and Correctional Services) V.K. Singh.”
