Few use Metro stations to cross busy streets

Many are unaware Metro stations can be used as FOBs

- NAVEENA GHANATE I DC HYDERABAD, OCT. 6

Months after Hyderabad Metro Rail threw its stations open for pedestrians to cross the busy roads underneath, few use the opportunity.

On Saturday, city-based freelance photographer, Sanjay Borra, saw a woman with a baby trying to cross the busy Khairatabad road near the Metro Rail station. He advised her to use the station to cross over, which she did.

The 41 Metro Rail stations can be used as foot over bridges (FoB) but jaywalking and darting between oncoming vehicles continue to be a threat to both road users and pedestrians.

The lack of awareness that Metro Rail stations can be used as FOBs is one of the key reasons pointed out. Mr B Adishankar of Roadkraft said, “Several people are not aware that metro stations can be used as FOBs. They were made aware during the inaugural in November but there was no follow up or subsequent information for the public. There are still people who think that they would need to buy a ticket, which leaves very few using it.”

Apart from awareness, the time spent by people in taking detours and the stations being away from major intersections are primary reasons, pointed out experts. Mr GSR Chaitanya, transport researcher said, “Our metro stations are a kilometre apart and many places are not close to intersections. People cross at intersections or markets where there is natural crossing. Many intersections were closed following the arrival of the Metro. In Dilsukhnagar, where there is busy market, people tend to use the FOB, but at Metro stations it is difficult to get on and off, especially for people who are not young.”
