Hosteller caught stealing, jumps from 4th floor

Embarrasse­d after being caught for stealing valuables of fellow hostel mates, a second-year engineerin­g girl student at Malla Reddy Engineerin­g College (MREC), Dundigal, attempted suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the hostel building on Wednesday night.

She suffered severe fractures and injuries to internal organs. She has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Pet Basheeraba­d ACP A. Srinivasa Rao said Sandhya, a native of Jagityal was studying second year Civil Engineerin­g at MREC in Maisammagu­da at Dulapally in Dundigal. She was residing in a college hostel (Room no 57 of block II) along with Laxmidurga, Soumya and Aharsha.

For the last few days, some articles belonging to the girl students were missing. As a result, the lockers of all the students were checked, where a pair of sports shorts belonging to another girl student was traced in Sandhya’s locker along with a few other articles and some money.

The roommates of Sandhya also told the hostel warden and the articles were returned to the students on Wednesday night. Following the incidents, Sandhya spoke to her father Bhumareddy, who assured that he would visit the college and sort out the problems.

At about 9.15 pm, the roommates of Sandhya went to the mess and brought food to the room. They suddenly heard a loud noise and rushed to the corridor to see Sandhya lying motionless on the ground, said the ACP.

“She suffered multiple fractures in her pelvic area and had internal bleeding,” said the ACP.
