Drunk driver rams pole, kills 1, injures 3, arrested

In a case of drunk driving on the PVNR Expressway, a man was killed and three others injured when a speeding car rammed into a pole at pillar no 179 late on Thursday night. The drunk driver was caught by Rajendrana­gar police at Aramghar cross roads when he was attempting to flee the place.

The incident happened at around 1 am when six persons working for ACT Fibernet were working on the expressway, installing cables for CCTV cameras being installed from Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital to Aramghar. T. Naveen Goud, project engineer along with five others J. Venkat Reddy, R. Kataiah, 40, Sudhakar, Suresh, and A Muttaiah are working from 11 pm to 5 am every day from October 1. They wore reflective jackets and used cones on the expressway as indicators. A speeding car (TS 15 UC 1529) heading towards Shamshabad from Mehdipatna­m rammed into a pole, injuring the workers. Kataiah flew into the air and fell on the car. The driver moved ahead and hit the railing, causing Kataiah’s immediate death.

Rajendrana­gar inspector G. Suresh said, “The driver of the car Mallikarju­n Goud, 30, fled from the spot with the damaged car. As soon as informatio­n was received, a police team rushed to the spot and shifted the injured persons to Osmania General Hospital for treatment. The car broke down finally at Aramghar. Mallikarju­n was nabbed when he was attempting to flee from the spot.”

Mallikarju­n was taken to the police station and tested with the breathe analyser where the blood alcohol content was recorded as 170 mg/100ml.

“Mallikarju­n is arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The other victims are stated to be out of danger. The body of Kataiah was handed over to his family after autopsy at the OGH mortuary,” said the inspector.
