Get set for a drenched Dasara

Winds of different nature to bring heavy rains

- COREENA SUARES | DC HYDERABAD, OCT. 17

Untimely rainfall is likely to dampen the festive spirit. The weather forecast is extremely heavy rainfall for the city on Thursday, when the state celebrates Dasara.

Hyderabad has turned into a “confluence zone” with the dry and hot northern winds coming from Rajasthan mixing with cold and humid winds from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in thunderstorms. Whenever winds of different natures confluence it results in heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder.

The city registered an average rainfall of 5 cm in 24 hours, which is unusual for this time of year. Rain clouds are heavily concentrated over Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medak districts, while dry weather prevails over northern Telangana. In a span of 12 hours, Madhapur received 12 cm rainfall that led to knee-deep water clogging; the main carriageway and petrol bunks were inundated. Asifnagar, Saroornagar, Khairatabad, Musheerabad, Saidabad and Balanagar received 5 cm of rainfall on Wednesday. Due to the unusual rainfall, vehicles had to slow down to 10-20 kmph.

The day temperatures that were around 34 degrees all of last week, dropped to 29 degrees celsius, while the cold and moisture-laden winds are adding a chill to the atmosphere.

Weather expert Mahesh Palawat said the current weather has nothing to do with the aftermath of Cyclone Titli which has already dissipated.

“Hyderabad has turned into a confluence zone with the mixing of two different winds which gives rise to thunderclouds. We are expecting on and off heavy rainfall over the city,” he said.

The weather forecast for the next 48 hours for the state is: Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning very likely to occur at isolated places in the southern districts of Telangana. In the city, rain or thundershowers would occur towards evening or night.”

THE CITY registered an average rainfall of 5 cm in 24 hours, which is unusual for this time of year.
