Woman held for marriage fraud

-

A 42-year-old woman from Mumbai who allegedly cheated a retired colonel's family to the tune of `3.36 lakh on the pretext of refunding the money was arrested by the Rachakonda cyber crime police on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody.

In his complaint to the Rachakonda cyber crime police, Retired Army colonel Bhupinder Singh said that he had created a profile of his son on Defence Matrimony site, in search of a suitable bride. After some days, he received a call from one Riddhima Kalsy, claiming to be a Neurosurgeon from Mumbai, expressing interest.

Later, the colonel’s son Dilpreeth Singh and the woman continued being in contact. One day, the woman asked Dilpreeth to give some money towards the expenses of her grandfather's treatment, as she has Non-Resident External and Non-Resident Ordinary accounts and could not withdraw money.

Believing her, Dilpreeth transferred `3.36 lakh to her friend’s bank account. After receiving money, the woman avoided him.

Rachakonda police said the team has traced the woman to Vashi area in Navi Mumbai. She has been identified as Reema Sandhu, a voice and accent trainer at a BPO. In order to earn easy money, Reema indulged in the fraud.

She was produced before a court at Mumbai and brought to the city on transit warrant and remanded to judicial custody, said the police. A sexagenarian succumbed to injuries on Tuesday after an alleged attack with a sickle by her son-inlaw four days ago over a family dispute.

The deceased, identified as Mallamma, 65, a resident of Vikarabad, came to her daughter Bachamma's residence at Brahma Shankar Colony of Jubilee Hills on October 25 to help and settle a family dispute with her husband Venkataiah.

“When Bachamma had gone for work and left Venkataiah at home, he started hitting his daughter Mounika over some issue and Mallamma objected to it. In a fit of rage, Venkataiah attacked her too with a sickle, resulting in grievous head injuries,” Jubilee Hills police Inspector C. Harishchandra said.

Local residents took her to a private hospital where she breathed her last. The Jubilee Hills police, who had already registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC, altered it to 302 (murder) and continued the investigation. The suspect is on the run, the police said.
