Ptosis surgery by Indians gets American approval
DROOPY EYELIDS are when the upper eyelid sags to the lower position more than normal and it obstructs the vision of the person. The reason for this is weak eye muscles. The drooping condition makes the eyes look asymmetrical and crooked.
A new technique to treat ptosis or droopy eyelids by Indian plastic surgeons has been accepted where the additional procedure to create a crease in the upper eyelid is found to improve the condition, according to research published in the American Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Surgical interventions were done for five years in 100 patients and their data was presented to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons which has accepted the modification in the procedure.
The accepted surgical technique is to elevate the upper eyelid so that the drooping can be curtailed. But in that technique, it was found that the eyes showed that they were operated upon. To add to this, the balanced vision in both the eyes was a challenge in patients. The common complaint was that one eye partly looked as if it operated creating an unnatural look.
With these complaints, plastic surgeons decided to create an eyelid crease. Eyelid crease means that when the eyelid opens wide after the surgery, it gives a balanced look due to the crease.
The study was carried out from 2011 to 2016 on 100 patients and the modified surgery technique of eyelid crease helped to maintain the symmetry between the eyes. This helped to improve the aesthetic appeal and led to greater patient satisfaction, observed the study.
Dr S. Nagesh, plastic surgeon at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences explained, “Ptosis is caused by many factors ranging from natural reasons like congenital factors, damage to the nerve and also medical conditions like tumour behind the eye, diabetes, stroke, neurological disorders, swelling of the eyes and other diseases. The prevalence in found in both men and women. When the vision is affected there is a need for surgical intervention.”
