Roads in Ameerpet area going to pot

Potholes not filled for over 6 years, residents say

- AVINASH PUJARI DC

Authorities have been ignoring a pothole problem in Lalbagh, Ameerpet, for more than six years, claim the residents.

Mr Azam, an employee who works at a showroom at the edge of the road at Lalbagh, on the way to the Institute of Genetics, claims that the eight- inch pothole on the road has become a part of his daily life.

Mr Azam said, “Every morning as I start my duty by lifting the shutter of the showroom, I say ‘hello’ to the pothole beside our showroom which was small till six years back but grew in front of me like a child. In the last one year, it has brought quite a headache for me during the rainy season. As it rains, you can see this six-year old, grown and growing, pothole splashing muddy water onto our showroom glass with the passing of any vehicle and I am the lucky guy who gets the opportunity to clean it.”

“I have spoken several times to municipal officials and staff who come once in a month but they hardly take notice of our issue. In the mornings, senior citizens and children who come for a walk at the Institute of Genetics which is at the end of the road face quite a problem to cross the pothole, filled with dirty, muddy water, which also is a breeding hub for mosquitoes,” he said, sighing heavily.

A resident of Lalbagh, Mr Moid Khan, said, “I have the first street which is graced by an eight-inch pothole. No one is there to look into the matter.

Residents here now are waiting for the next elections as leaders of different parties will come to meet us and we will justify their existence. The constant rain lashing Hyderabad has worsened the condition of the roads.

At Shantinagar in Ameerpet, residents are looking to TRS legislator Danam Nagender who had last visited the area to ask for the votes during the Assembly elections, as per the locals.

A big pothole in the middle of the road has been tormenting locals for the past four months. As per a local resident, Mr Sai Kiran, that the GHMC board stating ‘Work in Progress’ was placed above the big pothole four months ago. “A GHMC garbage truck passes by every day but there is no one to finish the ‘work in progress,” Mr Sai Kiran said, adding, "We tried calling the GHMC landline number but got no response."

A resident of Balkampet, Mr Nikhilender, who himself is in the field of construction said “The stretch just outside our house has underground drainage work going on from the past five months. We are patiently waiting for the work to get over”

Areas of Ameerpet, Begumpet, Balkampet and Sanathnagar flyover roads are in bad shape and the rain has just made things worse.
