CENTRE NOT TO INTERVENE IN AHMEDABAD — CHAVAN

AHMEDABAD, Sept. 24. Union Home Minister, Y.B. Chavan said here today that there was no need for Central interventi­on to quell the riots in Ahmedabad, “Everybody concerned is doing his best,” he added.

Admitting that tension still prevailed in the city on the sixth day of the disturbanc­es, he said “there is no case for Central interventi­on. The case is for Central help.”

The Union Home Minister, who arrived here to personally inspect the condition, was talking with newsmen.

Mr. Chavan said the supreme task at present was to bring back the situation to normalcy. He said the State Government had already appraised him of the steps being taken in this connection. The major problem in future would be to create a new psychologi­cal atmosphere to regenerate confidence among the people.

Mr. Chavan said he was convinced that the violence on September 20 and 21 was on a large-scale, but thereafter the army had brought the situation under control.

When asked in what form the Centre would help the State Government, the Home Minister said the main concern at present was to establish normalcy and the Centre was providing all the help for security. Although, looking at the present situation, there would be no need for further military help, he said, it would he sent in case of necessity.

Mr. Chavan said he was convinced that the violence on September 20 and 21 was on a large-scale, but the army had brought the situation under control.
