Success and failure are transitory, students told

Mr Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary Department of Science and Technology, gave the convocation address to passing out students at the University of Hyderabad on Tuesday at the Brahmakumaris Shanti Sarovar Auditorium.

“Don't confuse success with excellence. Both success and failures are transitory. It is our sensitivity to the little joys and sorrows of the world around us that makes our journey have any meaning at all,” he said.

In the 21st convocation, about 162 students received various medals for their excellence in academics and other co-curricular activities. This year, 1,565 students are graduating; of these 264 receive their Ph.D. This brings the total number of Ph.Ds produced at the university to 2959, and the number of graduating students since the time of its inception to 29897.

This year's convocation marked the University of Hyderabad’s entry into issuing digital certificates as well as those from the National Academic Depository (NAD). Also this year, for the first time, the university initiated the practice of awarding OBC medals to meritorious students from all departments. In his address to the gathering, Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, UoH, said, “The university has completed 45 years and is rated as one of the top universities in India.”

Varsity officials recalled that it was a proud moment for the university to be awarded the coveted status of an Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government of India. The IoE status mandates elevation of the UoH into the top 500 institutions of the world.
