Hyderabadis stuck in Karbala

Hundreds of Hyderabadis who reached Karbala for Arbayeen, an observance of 40 days of Moharram, have been asked to remain in their hotels following the civil unrest in the country.

According to reports, the over 100 Shia Muslims from Secunderabad and the same number from Hyderabad have reached Karbala, have now been advised by the government to stay in doors.

Over the last few days, at least 18 people have been killed and more than 700 injured in Iraq as armed forces fired shots and tear gas to suppress anti-government protesters demanding jobs, improved services and an end to perceived corruption.

Devotees from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata who reached Karbala for Arbyeen are stuck in the unrest. The stranded called their loved ones back in Hyderabad and informed them that they were safe. They have been ordered not to venture out nor began their walk until orders are passed. Every year millions visit Iraq for Arbayeen. Following the widespread protest, tight security is in place in Iraq for the culmination of the annual pilgrimage procession for Shia Muslims.

Thousands walk from Baghdad to the holy city of Karbala to mark the martyrdom of the Imam. Some walk for seven days while others for 10 days. “Over 50 families from Trimulgherry are currently in Karbala. They are safe. The group will only begin to walk when the government permits them. For now, they have been asked to stay inside,” said a Shia community member.
