A couple was killed while their three-year-old niece is in a critical condition after the bike on which they were travelling was hit from the rear by a speeding SUV on the service road beside the Outer Ring Road in Rajendranagar on Sunday. The driver of the SUV, a minor, also suffered severe injuries in the accident.

Rajendranagar police identified the deceased as Lingamolla Chennaiah, 38, and his wife Padmamma, 32, residents of Moinabad and natives of Nawabpet mandal in Mahbubnagar district. They were heading to their native place along with their niece to attend Dasara festivities.

Chennaiah, a mason, was riding the bike (AP 22 S 7681), with his wife and niece Mounika riding pillion on the service road of ORR near the Telangana State Police Academy junction. Moving in the same direction, the speeding SUV (TS 11 EG 8002) rammed into the bike from the rear. A minor, the driver of the SUV could not control the vehicle, which fell into a trench and turned turtle.

The couple succumbed to their severe bleeding injuries on the spot. Mounika and driver of the SUV also suffered major injuries. While the girl was rushed to Osmania General Hospital, the car driver was shifted to a private hospital for treatment. The girl’s condition is said to be critical, police said.

Rajendranagar Inspector G. Suresh said the overspeeding SUV was the cause of the accident.

“It is said the SUV driver is a minor. We will ascertain facts before taking necessary action,” the inspector said.

Bodies of Chennaiah and Padmamma have been shifted to OGH mortuary for postmortem examination.
