Petty complaints diluting serious cyber crime cases

The National Cyber Security portal of the Union government that is aimed at curbing cyber crimes is being misused by miscreants, who are basically complainan­ts registerin­g petty cases. Consequent­ly, police teams from districts and local police stations are at their wits end while trying to trace the complainan­ts.

For instance, a person from Anantapur Rural mandal uploaded a complaint on the portal about `900 that he could not trace and was missing. The complaint was forwarded to the district police, which could not trace the person, who had just provided a phone number and no address.

After tracing the person based on his phone number, the crime branch police found that

Similarly, another complaint mentioned that he was from Roddam police station limits in Anantapur. “After enquiry we contacted the person, who was residing in Australia and not in Roddam,” an official said. Reports revealed that more than 75 per cent of cases registered with the cyber cell in 2018 remained unsolved, ess-entially because criminals seem to be making better use of techniques to hoodwink cops. In essence, the portal ca-ters to complaints pertaining to 24 issues, including online child pornograph­y, child sexual abuse material, among others.

Complaints reported on this portal are dealt by law enforcemen­t agencies or police based on the informatio­n available. It is imperative to provide correct and accurate details while filing complaints to ensure prompt action.

There are two options for reporting cybercrime­s on the portalrepo­rt crime related to women/ child. Under this section, a person can report complaints pertaining to online Child Pornograph­y (CP), Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) or sexually explicit content such as Rape/Gang Rape (CP/RGR) content.

A victim can also report complaints pertaining to cybercrime­s such as mobile crimes, online and social media crimes, online financial frauds, ransomware, hacking, crypto currency crimes and online cyber traffickin­g.
