Beneficiaries say houses built by state are weak

- DURGA PRASAD SUNKU I DC

Family members and locals blame the government for handing over a half constructed house to them. Though they are living in the heart of the city they feel like they are living 50 years behind other parts of the city. They have demanded 2BHK houses for the victim’s family and a job in GHMC.

This is not the first time a badly constructed government built house has claimed lives. Six people including a pregnant woman died around 15 years ago when a wall collapsed behind this same house, recalls Arjun, a local resident.

“There was a lot of rain in the city for about six days which weakened the wall. The then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu had sanctioned houses in this area and the house was built by the concerned authorities. They have handed over half constructed houses with structural weaknesses,” he alleged.

Bharat Lal, a member of KCR Seva Dal told Deccan Chronicle, “We roam around the state to create awareness about government programmes and their advantages. But we could not build our own houses properly. For decades we have been living in this area without proper basic amenities. Though we are living in the heart of the city we feel that we are living 50 years behind other parts of the city. The politicians who visited each and every house during the time of elections were nowhere to be found during this time of distress.”

District vigilance monitor committee member Ram Prasad who visited the spot demanded that a 2-BHK flat should be given to the distraught family immediately and a job should be provided to the distressed father and ex gratia grant to the family. Apart from that, all eligible families should be given 2-BHK flats to avoid any further mishaps like this.

He demanded that Government Whip M.S. Prabhakar Rao take up this issue with minister K.T. Rama Rao and help the family. Mr Prabhakar Rao has requested Mr Rama Rao to grant financial assistance to the victims' father under Apathbandhu or any other suitable scheme, grant them a 2-BHK house and provide employment to the father of the children, Metai Lal, in the GHMC.
