There is a “third eye” closely watching movements of vehicles to detect violation of the three-kilometre rule for fetching essential commodities. The government has stipulated that whatever shopping a person needs to do during the lockdown period has to be within a three-kilometre distance from home.

Violators of the rule will find challans slapped against them, thanks to the state police using Artificial Intelligencebased video analytics from Wednesday onwards for strict implementation of the lockdown imposed throughout the state owing to Covid-19. Owners of vehicles that violate the order will be booked.

There are about 250 junctions in Hyderabad, where thousands of high definition cameras have been installed to capture violations of traffic rules. These cameras have now been equipped with Automatic Number Plate Reading software, which will read the registration numbers of vehicles crossing the junction.

The software automatically calculates the distance travelled by the vehicle once it crosses the next junction. On Wednesday alone, over 1,000 vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, were seen violating the three-kilometre rule. Police are now identifying owners of these vehicles to slap cases against them under relevant sections of the IPC and Epidemic Act.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior police official said, “The software detects vehicles that cross the three-kilometre limit and indicates a popup along with images. Our teams are in the process of identifying owners of these vehicles to book cases against them for violating the lockdown.”

The official pointed out that youngsters have been coming onto roads to take selfies and shoot TikTok videos. Some are even taking up challenges of covering distances in the shortest time. “We appeal to the public not to venture onto roads unnecessarily and get into trouble,” the official added.
