Stranded varsity students worried over facilities

Due to lockdown about 300 UoH, 80 Eflu students are stranded in Hyd universities

- HARLEEN MINOCHA | DC

At least 300 students of the University of Hyderabad and close to 80 Indian and International students at the English and Foreign Languages University are stranded at their hostels due to the lockdown, adding to worries, concerns and homesickness amidst the uncertainty.

Students on the University of Hyderabad campus have raised complaints against the authorities for doing the bare minimum for teaching and nonteaching staffers, and students in hostels during the lockdown.

Abhishek Nandan, president, UoH Student Union, said, “One issue is that of the university authorities not establishing appropriate safety measures for students in hostels. We have been demanding soaps and handwash to be provided in the washrooms for a long time now. We understand that the situation is such that expecting the washrooms to be cleaned daily is out of the question, hence we have stopped asking.”

He said that the university is not providing hand gloves and effective masks to the mess workers coming from outside, which has added to the worries of 300 students eating every day at the hostel mess.

Countering this, UoH spokesperson Prof. Vinod Pavarala said, “We do have outsourced workers coming to the university campus, and we have issued an advisory to their agencies to provide safety gear to the workers. The agencies have the primary responsibility for this, and not the university.”

At the English and Foreign Languages University, students both Indian and International, have been provided with induction cooktops and basic utensils to cook their meals, while the mess service remains shut.

On being asked how do these students spend their spare time at the hostel, most students said they lean towards technology and the Internet these days, with Netflix and social media to kill time, while others are utilizing it for honing different skills like painting and poetry.
