Doc: Telemedicine is the way forward
Why are doctors reluctant to practice telemedicine?
Any new technology needs time for adoption. Till recently, tele-consultations were not allowed. Only a couple of weeks ago, the government made them legal. The adoption rate has caught up and we are seeing almost all our doctors adapting to the new way of delivering care. There are teething problems but they are sorted out as we have digital teams assisting them.
Where does telemedicine stand legally?
It is legally allowed now. With the lockdown in place, this becomes an important tool for continuity of care. Old patients are connecting with their doctors and even new patients are seeking medical advice using this platform now.
How is this option working out for patients?
Travel restrictions, lockdown and fear of Covid-19 are keeping the patients at home. The disease load is there in community and telemedicine has become a useful tool to seek medical care for non-emergency and minor ailments.
What are the extra cautions that a doctor must take?
We need to have a complete medical record for the tele-consultancy. Patients need to answer questions correctly, specific details when asked must be provided. Data of patients is private and it is only for the doctor’s diagnostic knowledge. For old patients, it is becoming an easy exercise.
When it is found that tele-consultation is not helping, the patients are asked to come and see immediately.
Is this going to be the way ahead for simple diseases in the future?
Yes. For sometime now, opting for this method is the best way forward.
