WB Governor gets trolled for saying damage due to cyclone ‘minimum’

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI | DC

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday called the extent of damage due to Cyclone Amphan’s onslaught in the state as “minimum” leaving him trolled on Twitter.

While some netizens suggested his official residence, Raj Bhavan be turned by the Mamata Banerjee government into a relief centre, others blamed his presence for all the disasters, be it Covid-19 pandemic or cyclone.

Facing criticism Dhankhar took an Uturn after two hours and described the degree of damage as “massive.”

At 10.17 am, Dhankhar tweeted, “I am shocked at the loss of life or property damage caused by the rage of Amphan. I had been in constant touch with various agencies for the last few days. Their sense of responsibility has resulted in minimum damage. Yet it has left a devastating mark which is the most horrific in many decades. Now everyone have to jump to an all-out relief work.”

Sharply reacting to him, a netizen Badshah Raj tweeted, “The state government @MamataOfficial can surely do one thing. Since many rooms and halls of the Raj Bhavan have been lying empty, it can be used as a shelter. The expenditure of the Raj Bhavan must be reduced too.”

Another Twiterati Debanjan Das replied to Dhankhar, “When a face like yours has entered Bengal, misery is bound to happen. Who knows what more other than epidemics, storms, rains, disease left to be seen!”

At 12.47 pm, Dhankhar tweeted, “In touch with service providers for restoration of mobile connectivity and internet. In such stressful situation is essential for reach out. Take care of yourself and others in need. Damage has been indeed painfully huge. Awaiting report @MamataOfficial for further steps.”

“Super cyclone #Amphan has caused unprecedented havoc and disaster. People suffering is unimaginable. Urge all including NGOs to swing into action to provide relief to the needy. Am awaiting report @MamataOfficial so that all other steps @PMOIndia may be urgently taken.”
