CORONAVIRU­S DEATH TOLL CROSSES 4,000, RISES NEARLY 1,000 IN 7 DAYS

India on Sunday reported 6,823 new Coronaviru­s positive cases and 147 deaths in the past 24 hours. According to the website covid19ind­ia.org, the total Covid-19 count has risen to 1,38,208, and the death toll has crossed the 4,000-mark. This is the third day running India has reported over 6,000 cases.

In just seven days, nearly 1,000 people have succumbed to health complicati­ons caused by Coronaviru­s in the country. The death toll, which was 3,025 on May 18, has risen to 4,016 on Sunday — an increase of 991 or 32.7 per cent.

The Coronaviru­s cases have also increased from 95,639 a week back to 1,38,208 on Sunday. This is an increase of 42,569 cases or 44 per cent in seven days — hinting that the Covid-19 cases are doubling nearly every 16 days in the country.

The total Coronaviru­s cases count has risen to

1,31,868, and the death toll to 3,867.

This is the third day running India has reported over 6,000 cases.

According to the data gathering website covid19ind­ia.org, the toll stood at 4,014, and the number of cases at 1,38,059, an increase of 6,634 cases.

The Centre directed the authoritie­s in 11 municipal areas that account for 70 per cent cases to ramp up health infrastruc­ture and ensure readiness in the next two months.

These areas are from Maharashtr­a, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya

Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan.

The Centre asked these municipal areas to step up monitoring in old cities, urban slums and other high-density pockets like camps and clusters for guest workers.

In the past 24 hours, the number of recovered cases have increased.

Data showed 54,441 people had recovered, taking the recovery rate to 41.28 per cent. covid19ind­ia.org put the figure at 57,457.

A day after the Sikkim government decided to reopen schools from June 15, the tiny Himalayan state reported its first confirmed case: a 25-year-old student who returned from Delhi tested positive. Sikkim, Lakshadwee­p, Nagaland and Daman and Diu were the only four states/ UTs with no positive cases. Nagaland got its first case in April.

Goa was Coronaviru­s-free for a brief period before domestic travel restarted. Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have one case each.

Maharashtr­a remained the worst-affected state, with 47,190 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (15,512), Gujarat (13,664), and Delhi (12,910).

India is the 10 most affected country now going by the number of cases, according to worldomete­r.com.

India, however, has far fewer deaths than many of the Top 10 countries except for Russia. The US, it may be noted, is approachin­g the 1 lakh mark in the number of patients dead.

Given its high daily average in the past few days, India is fast approachin­g the overall tally of Turkey, the ninth most affected in the world, with nearly 1.57 lakh cases.
