An assistant professor at arts college, Osmania University, Ajay Kumar, husband of Shaikpet tahsildar, Ch. Sujatha, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from an apartment at Chikkadpally on Wednesday morning.

Sujatha was arrested by Telangana anti-corruption bureau officials in a bribery case during the second week of June.

The incident took place at Chikkadpally street no. 10 at around 7.30 am. Kumar, 46, a resident of Gandhi Nagar area, had been staying at his elder sister’s house in the locality since the arrest of his wife Ch. Sujatha. The couple has two young children.

Chikkadpally inspector, P. Shiva Shankar Rao, said that Ajay was allegedly depressed after his wife’s arrest, due to which his family members asked him to stay with his sister. At around 7.30 am, he jumped from the fifth floor of the building and died on the spot.

“Ajay Kumar was working as an assistant professor teaching political science at arts college in Osmania University,” said the inspector.

He said that Ajay did not leave any note behind but had sent a message to one of his students, a civil services aspirant, to take care of his kids.

A case has been registered and the body is being handed over to the family after the autopsy at the Osmania general hospital mortuary, said the inspector.

On Wednesday, a court granted 20 days of bail to Sujatha, who was lodged at a women’s prison in the city post her arrest.

Ch. Sujatha was arrested for having huge, unaccounted assets in possession. Following her arrest, the ACB also arrested a revenue inspector and a sub-inspector working at Banjara Hills police station in the land issue.
