Police frames charges against activist after BJP man’s complaint

The Kerala police has registered a case against activist Rehana Fathima for making her children paint on her semi-nude body.

The police has slapped non-bailable charges against her under the Kerala Police Act, Juvenile Justice Act and the

Information Technology Act. The activist had shared a YouTube video on Facebook on June 19 of her son and daughter painting on her semi-nude body.

According to Kerala’s Thiruvalla police, the case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by a local BJP leader against Rehana.

In a Facebook post that accompanied the video, she wrote: “It is false sexual consciousness that is currently being given to society. Just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so is porn in the eyes of the beholder.”

Rehana maintained that the video was created to send across the message that women need to be open about sex and their body in a society where such issues are a taboo.

The Kerala-based activist came in for wide criticism on the social media with many alleging that her act amounted to child abuse. However, there were also many people who appreciated her boldness.

Rehana, a former employee of the state-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, had hit news headlines in 2018 when she attempted to climb Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala on the strength of Supreme Court order allowing women of all ages in the temple. She, however, was arrested and sent back.
