1,000 CASES IN TS IN ONE DAY

As many as 888 fresh positive cases emerge in GHMC area; death toll in state rises to 243

Telangana state recorded more than 1,000 Covid-19 positive cases on Saturday, joining a group of states that are reporting a large number of cases. The first case was reported on March 2 in the state.

The state recorded 1,087 new cases, taking the tally to 13,436 so far. Of these, 888 were recorded in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporatio­n area, which mostly comprises Hyderabad city. The death toll rose to 243, with six more persons succumbing to the Coronaviru­s infection.

On Saturday, only three states reported more cases than Telangana: Maharashtr­a with 6,368, Tamil Nadu 3,714 and Delhi 2,948.

6, the state crossed the 200 cases-a-day mark, the 300 mark on June 18 and the

400 mark on June 19. It went past 500 cases on June 2, 700 on June 21,, 800 on June 22 and crossed the

900-cases mark on Friday. Though 162 persons were reported to have been discharged, the number of active cases increased to

8,265 on Saturday.

The 1,087 positive cases came after samples collected from 3,923 persons were tested, the daily Covid-19 bulletin issued by the health department said.

After Hyderabad, the highest number of cases,

74, came from Ranga Reddy district, followed by

37 from MedchalMal­kajgiri, 35 from Nalgonda, 11 from Sangareddy, seven from Warangal Urban, five each from Kamareddy, Karimnagar and Mahbu-bnagar.

Nagarkurno­ol and Jangaon recorded four cases each and RajannaSir­icilla three. Two cases each were reported from Siddipet and BhadradriK­othagudem, and one each from Asifabad, Khammam, Wanaparthy, Mahbubabad and Mancherial districts.

Health minister Etala Rajendar, meanwhile, announced that recruitmen­t of medical and support staff for Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences at Gachibowli has been completed and the staff will join duty from Monday. As many as 13,000 applicatio­ns were received for the 499 posts at TIMS, he said.

He called on people with possible Covid-19 symptoms to report to the King Koti, Fever, Chest, Sarojini Devi, Kondapur and Vanasthali­puram area hospitals for testing. He also appealed to the people to strictly follow physical distancing while in public places and take personal safety seriously.
