The grounds in the prestigious Nizam college here in the city, once k, and for the city’s league cricket matches, as well as the stomping grounds for tens of thousands of students over the years, were on Wednesday turned into an automobile junk yard by the state government.

On Wednesday, hundreds of junked vehicles that dotted the parking lots in the state secretariat complex, were dragged out with breakdown assistance vehicles of the city police pressed into service.

All the abandoned junked four-wheelers, as well as some two-wheelers, were taken to the Nizam college grounds where they were left.

It may be recalled that the Telangana High Court had this past Monday dismissed petitions against the government’s plans to demolish the secretariat complex and build a new one in its place. The removal of the junked automobiles is being viewed as a prelude to cleaning up the complex as the government makes plans for its possible demolition.

However, the college authorities were not informed that the premises of the educational institution would be used to dump the vehicles abandoned over the years in the secretariat complex. The college is under the jurisdiction of Osmania university, and when asked about Wednesday’s developments, a university official said the government did not seek any permission for parking the vehicles in the premises. There has been no correspondence on the matter at all, the official said.

Prof. Lakshmi Reddy, alumni and retired professor from Nizam college, said: “It’s not only a surprise, but it’s bad news. This college produced some of India’s greatest national and international personalities. These grounds gave birth to many international sports personalities. And now, the government has turned it into a junkyard.”
