The Banjara Hills police busted an internatio­nal kidney selling racket and arrested one Dogiparthi Shanmukha Pavan Srinivas, 25, on Saturday. Police said Srinivas was directly and indirectly involved in illegal kidney transplant­ation operations which took place abroad.

The matter came to light when he cheated a couple of `34 lakh. The complainan­t, B. Bharathi, told the Banjara Hills police that her husband Nagaraj is undergoing treatment for kidney disease at a private hospital in the city.

“As per preliminar­y investigat­ions, the accused was involved in striking deals in 30 cases and was directly involved in nine cases in which one person died due to operation failure. A case was registered and he was detained in Sri Lanka for illegal stay.

`6 lakh from the recipient. With that amount he cleared all his debts. “After witnessing huge profits, he developed the contacts and resorted to this illegal business,” the police said.

The police has identified four hospitals in Sri Lanka and Turkey which perform the procedure illegally.

The Banjara Hills police booked Pavan for criminal breach of trust and cheating. Pavan has been sent to judicial custody.
