- DC CORRESPONDENT

CHILDREN OF Telugu speaking states, particularly from Telangana, lost one of their best friends they would have never even heard of.

Prominent child rights activist, P. Achyuta Rao, on Wednesday succumbed to Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here in the city. He was 58.

In his death, children of Telugu speaking states, particularly from Telangana, lost one of their best friends they would have never even heard of. For Rao, it did not matter where a child came from. Whether made to work illegally in brick kilns or students from well-to-do families struggling with new psychological stresses brought on by online education, their problems were approached by him with equal attention and passion.

Admitted to the hospital about a week ago suffering from Covid19 symptoms, Rao was reportedly suffering from some long-term health issues such as diabetes and was placed on a ventilator for the past few days, but did not recover, according to hospital sources.

Founder of the Balala Hakkula Sangham in 1985, along with his wife Anuradha, Rao was considered the voice of children dispossessed of their rights and wasn’t willing to give up his fight for them.

He was also a past member of the state committee for protection of child rights.

One of his last campaigns was related to

Covid-19 and true to his passion about children and their welfare, it related to them. During the last week of June, Rao urged the Telangana government to recognise the risk posed to children by

Covid-19. Children need separate Covid-19 facilities considering the fact that they are a vulnerable group who could be affected by the disease, Rao had said.
