TS Covid tally over 2,000 in 24 hours for first time

11 more die, toll touches 530

For the first time, Telangana state recorded more than 2,000 Covid-19 cases in a day. The health department said the new cases for the 24-hour period ending at 8 pm on Friday were 2,083. Eleven more persons succumbed to the disease, taking to 530 the number of fatalities.

The number of active cases continued to witness a rise, to 17,754 till Friday evening, according to the Covid-19 bulletin released on Saturday, from 16,796 on the previous day. For Thursday, this figure stood at 15,640, including 11,359 under home or institutio­nal isolation.

While GHMC area recorded the single highest number of cases for Friday with 578, this accounted just a little less than a fourth of the total cases declared for the day.

Cases emerging from several districts turning into the new hotspots of the disease accounted for 1,505 Covid-19 infections along with the rest of districts.

Top among emerging hotspot districts were Ranga Reddy (228 cases), Medchal-Malkajgiri (197), Warangal Urban (134), Karimnagar (108), and Sangareddy with 101 cases, accounting between them for 768 cases.

Meanwhile, private hospitals continued to dominate the Covid-19 care despite the state promising free and effective care. Private hospitals had significan­tly higher number of admitted patients.

According to the health department bulletin, between them, the 51 government-run Covid-19 hospitals with a total bed strength of 8,446, had 2,354 admitted patients as on July 31.

On the other hand, 4,041 patients were reported as admitted in the 94 private hospitals which between them had 6,642 beds for Covid-19 patients.

The number of Covid-19 positive cases in home or institutio­nal isolation too has been rising. On July 29, there were 10,155 such individual­s, while on July 30 this number stood at 10,632, and on July 31, the number was 11,359, according to the bulletin.
