HC RUES LACK OF CIVIC SENSE AMONG PEOPLE
Noticing that most pedestrians prefer the haphazard road crossing on busy roads of the city while ignoring the safer foot overbridges (FOBs) facility, the Telangana High Court observed that it might be due to the steepness of the steps that are potentially risky. It said that this shortcoming should be looked into by GHMC authorities. Justice Challa Kodandaram asked the civic body to set up an escalator system or ramp at FOBs to make it convenient for commuters, especially aged people and women. This will also help improve civic sense.
The judge was dealing with a petition by Ruhaina Apartment Owners Association at Tarnaka, seeking directions to GHMC not to go ahead with its proposal to erect an FOB in front of their apartment complex.
Justice Kodandaram rejected the plea of the petitioners but expressed concern about the zigzag road crossing and why people were not getting accustomed to zebra crossing.
“Many people are not accustomed to using zebracrossing which is not in existence on account of the apathy of the municipal and police authorities. There is also no requirement of mentioning the lack of basic civic sense among the people, which seems they have not been ingrained at the school level,” he observed.
At the same time, Justice Kodandaram stated that there were inconveniences in using FoBs and opined that it was not being patronised on account of the steepness of the steps.
