Nandi Yellaiah, Cong senior, dies of Covid

Senior Congress leader and eighttime PM Nandi Yellaiah died after being tested positive for Covid-19 here on Saturday. He was 78. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.

A prominent Dalit leader, Yellaiah was vice-president of the TPCC till his death.

The TPCC said that Yellaiah was admitted to NIMS with complaints of pneumonia on July 29. He tested positive for Covid-19, later. After undergoing treatment for 10 days, he died at 10.30 am.

Born on July 1, 1942 at Bholakpur in Hyderabad, Yellaiah began his political career as a follower of Dr Marri Channa Reddy and took part in the 1969 Telangana movement. He was a MCH councillor in the 1970s.

Yellaiah was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977 from the Siddipet, a seat he won four more times.

In 2014, he was elected from the the Nagarkurno­ol parliament­ary constituen­cy, defeating Manda Jagannatha­m of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha twice and also worked as a member of the state Legislativ­e Council for some time. The last rites of Yellaiah were performed at Bansilalpe­t crematoriu­m in Secunderab­ad

Expressing sorrow, Chief Minister K. Chandrashe­kar Rao conveyed his condolence­s to the bereaved family. TPCC chief Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, senior leaders of the party, including Marri Shashidhar Reddy, V. Hanumanth Rao, Sampath Kumar and others mourned the death of Yellaiah.
