10 spillway gates lifted at Srisailam dam

With heavy floods in both Krishna and Tungabhadr­a rivers, ten spillway gates of Srisailam Dam were opened on Thursday.

Priyadarsh­ini jurala project on Krishna River is dischargin­g 350000 cusecs of water into Srisailam Reservoir while Sunkesula Barrage has opened 23 gates by letting out 110000 cusecs of water. A total of 460000 cusecs were received till Thursday evening.

The water level at Srisailam reservoir stood at 883.90 ft as against the total height of 885 ft. The quantum of water stored is 209 tmc against its full capacity of 215 tmc. Dam officials released 3,02,716 cusecs of water, including 1,92,990 cusecs to Nagarjuna Sagar by lifting seven crest gates.

Meanwhile, officials are on high alert and advising people not to visit water reservoirs and dams. Nandyal sub-collector Kalpana Kumari, along with revenue and police officials, visited several low-lying areas in the river bank of Kundu in Nandyal town.

Presently, all 13 generators of both power stations are continuing production. Sources said seven units of Andhra Pradesh power house were producing 700 MW of power by utilising 31,062 cusecs of water from the Srisailam dam while six units of Telangana power house were producing 900 MW by utilising 40,259 cusecs from the same dam.

Outflows from the Srisailam reservoir are 302577 cusecs from spillway, Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanti lift irrigation scheme draws 1,688 cusecs, Pothireddy­padu head regulator is drawing 37,000 cusecs while the reservoir is receiving water from both Jurala project via Krishna River and Sunkesula dam through Tungabhadr­a River.

Jagan to visit Srisailam today.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is visiting Srisailam project on Friday to perform Jal Harathi on Krishna River for the water wealth bestowed on the territory. This is his first visit to Srisailam after assuming office.

It is customary on the part of the State ministers to offer Jala harathi before the main gates are opened for the first time during the season.

Jagan Mohan Reddy will be accompanie­d by water resource Minister Anil Kumar Yadav and Finance Minister Buggana Rajendrana­th Reddy. He will interact with engineerin­g officials and find out the progress of various works taken up from Pothireddy­padu head regulator and Rayalaseem­a lift irrigation scheme tenders that were finalised recently.
