TIRUPATI TO GET E-POWER PUSH FOR SMART CITY

- AVINASH P. SUBRAMANYAM | DC

The advisory committee of the Tirupati Smart City Corporation Limited (TSCCL) has approved several eco-friendly projects to develop the temple town as a smart city. The corporation is scouting for agencies to execute these initiatives, including setting up of battery charging stations, modular toilets, dormitories for RTC commuters, and modernisation of the graveyard.

A major eco-friendly project is setting up of battery recharging stations at 13 points across Tirupati. These will enable e-bikes, ecars and e-auto rickshaws, which are already operating in the temple city, to recharge their vehicles more easily.

e-bikes have become popular in recent times with municipal workers using them widely as a means of transport. Similarly, e-cars are being used by most of officials of APSPDCL as well as some private organisations. The number of eautos in the city has also increased in recent times.

TSCCL proposes to purchase 40 e-bikes for police to patrol the city. These bikes will have advanced equipment like GPS tracking, apart from siren and floodlights. The advisory committee has suggested that these e-bikes be procured from a reputed electric motorcycle company.

The smart city corporation further wants to create amenities like modular toilets, dormitories, and multi-level car parking facilities for convenience of RTC commuters. In addition, it is proposing to start a gas-based crematorium at the Harishchandra Smasana Vatika. Work on this crematorium has already commenced and it is expected to be completed on or before September 10.

The other plans of TSCCL include building a 25 MLD sewage treatment plant in the city, laying new cement concrete roads and creating an additional sports facility on the Nehru municipal high school grounds.
