- DC CORRESPONDENT

Even as the world woke up to the news of the first fully documented case of a

Covid-19 reinfection in Hong Kong, comes information that two such cases could well emerge in Hyderabad.

Responding to a question on the issue of Covid19 re-infections, Director of Health Services Dr G. Srinivasa Rao had said that more information is awaited with respect to the two possible cases in the city. He made it very clear to mediapersons that the matter at this point of time was speculative.

Incidentally, health minister Etala Rajendar referred to this possibility on Tuesday in an interview to a television channel.

“There is no guarantee that a person who contracted Covid-19 and is cured does not get the disease again. Those who do not develop enough antibodies for the virus after being infected can be reinfected,” he said.

Of the one lakh plus cases so far in the state, only two persons have been tested positive for the second time, he told the news channel.

Deccan Chronicle had reported two other cases of reinfection but they were not followed up at that time.

Since the viral fingerprinting of the Coronavirus samples from the two Covid-19 patients were treated for the disease for the second time in two different hospitals in the city, a final conclusion on the matter cannot be reached, it is learnt. The results of tests on determining the viral RNA fingerprinting are expected to take time. Only when the results are available can any conclusion be drawn if the two individuals, both medical professionals, were infected by different strains of the Coronavirus as was the case in Hong Kong instance.
