A woman of Veenavanka village in Karimnagar district sold her one-month-old granddaughter for `1.1 lakh to clear her debts. The incident, which took place four days ago, came to light on Friday when the infant’s grandfather Mothe Yadagiri informed the police.

The baby’s mother Jamalpur Padma, who signed papers approving the child’s sale, said she did so after her mother M. Kanakamma got her drunk.

Padma, 32, had been married to a person 10 years ago and the couple had two children. Four years back, she fell in love with one Ramesh, a mutton shop owner of the same village. She left her family and married Ramesh. The couple moved to Hyderabad.

A month ago, Padma delivered a girl child. She and Ramesh celebrated the 21st day of the girl’s birth with his family. A week ago, the couple quarrelled and Padma returned to her mother Kanakamma’s house in Veenavanka. Kanakamma had been staying separately from husband

● THE BABY’S mother who signed papers approving the child’s sale, said she did so after her mother M. Kanakamma got her drunk.

● SHE TRIED to sell the baby for ` 2 lakh but the middleman did not agree Yadagiri, the baby’s grandfather, who had opposed Padma’s marriage to Ramesh over caste issues.

Police said Kanakamma persuaded Padma to sell the baby and took her signature on some papers. She tried to sell the baby for `2 lakh but a middleman offered her only `1.1 lakh. Kanakamma sold the baby to a family belonging to Gumpala village of Odelu mandal in Peddapalli district. Yadagiri was aware of the baby’s birth and was surprised to notice his daughter without the child for four days. He then informed police who, along with officials of child and women welfare department, went to the village and inquired with Padma and Kanakamma about the baby. That is when the entire story came out.

While Padma told the police that Kanakamma had sold the baby after getting her drunk, Kanakamma says she did so after Padma agreed. She told the police she has also shared the money with Padma.

Police have registered a case against Kanakamma and those who helped her sell the baby. Officials have sent Padma and her daughter to the Integrated Child Development Centre. Padma’s husband Ramesh said he was unaware of the entire incident.
