GHMC scraps 4 major city flyover projects

Foundation stones to be laid for more projects

- MADDY DEEKSHITH I DC

Key officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have disclosed that the skyways proposed under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) will not see the light of day for the present. Proposals for construction of four flyovers near KBR Park, Rasoolpura, Uppal and Khajaguda will be halted as the existing infrastructure will be sufficient for catering to the city traffic post Covid-19 lockdown.

According to officials monitoring the SRDP, though tenders had been finalised and work orders had been given for the KBR junction flyover, GHMC has not handed over the work to the contractor since 2015 due to delay in clearance from the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change. This is because most of this project falls in the eco

sensitive zone of KBR Park. The project also faces a case in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The KBR project has to be now coordinated by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).

Construction at the flyover at Uppal junction has been delayed due acquisition of land pertaining to Survey of India, a Central government entity. Corporation officials claim the project has now been handed over the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

The proposed 500-metre elevated corridor with a 45 metre width, from the

back of Biodiversity Park to Raidurgam police station, has been placed on to the back burner as the GHMC has not even floated tenders. Besides, the project near Shilparamam at Cyber Towers has been put on hold. The delay in Khajaguda and Cyber Towers flyover has irked minister K.T. Rama Rao so much that he instructed the corporation to cancel permission given to the agency concerned.

The only flyover, which was under active consideration, was the elevated corridor at Rasoolpura junction. The three-lane flyover, which would pass from behind the

HMRL office via Patigadda requires the Centre's land. The state government is ready to hand over land where the police quarters are currently located. Despite Rama Rao writing to the Centre on the issue, there has been no response.

Civic authorities say the government will organise ground breaking ceremonies for all the skyways for which tenders would be finalised prior to the Assembly session.

They said Rama Rao will inaugurate Durgam Cheruvu cable stayed bridge and Jubilee Hills Road No 45 elevated corridor only after September 15.

“Work on the ongoing projects is going on briskly in the West Zone while being at a snail’s pace on the LB Nagar side. Work is in progress for works worth `7,000 crore. Because of shortage of labour it might take the next four years for completing them”, an official said.
